Recognizing and Overcoming System Automation Challenges

Time: 14:35-15:25
Location: Room 3

Speakers:

Jim Melby and Sandra Dawson
Lockheed Martin

Abstract:

As systems complexity grows, the importance of early testing and digital engineering cannot be overstated. However, automating testing in this context presents distinct challenges. This presentation will delve into the pitfalls and intangible factors that can impede automation adoption, drawing from real-world program experiences. Attendees will gain valuable insights on how to overcome these challenges, unlock the full potential of automation, and drive systems engineering transformation. By understanding the critical role of program intangibles, participants will learn how to effectively leverage automation to shift testing earlier in the development lifecycle and accelerate digital transformation.

Speaker Bios:

Jim Melby

Jim Melby is currently works at Lockheed Martin in Fort worth and is the lead architect for system test automation on F-16 and T-50.  He has been with Lockheed Martin for over 30 years and the last 20 of those has been focused on system test automation.  Jim started his journey into system test automation when he designed and architected the application TWIN (Testing Without Interaction), which is now the preferred system test automation tool for Lockheed Martin’s RMS division.  Prior to test automation, Jim was focused on Simulation/Stimulation assisting in system test integration.  Jim has a M.S. in Computer Science and an M.B.A from Binghamton University, and a B.S. in Mathematics from SUNY Oswego.

Sandra Dawson

Sandra is a Doctor of Engineering (D.Eng.) in Systems Engineering graduate from Colorado State University and was the first D. Eng graduate in May, 2023.  As an electrical and systems engineer, Sandra has worked in the transportation and defense industries holding technical leadership roles. Her doctoral pursuit complemented two engineering and two business graduate degrees along with the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) certification awarded in 2013. Sandra is a Lockheed Martin Fellow focusing on Systems Engineering and Digital Engineering.
